'Bringing out the best in everyone.'

Governing Body

Our Governors support Tilston School, the headteacher and the staff by helping with the leadership and management of the school. Their formal role involves setting the main objectives, policies and targets for the school. These include targets for educational improvement, the Strategic School Development Plan, the budget and staffing policies. The role of Governors includes monitoring the progress and success of the school and challenging the headteacher in a constructive and supportive way.

To get in touch with any of the Governors, contact the School Office on (01829) 250204 or e-mail  admin@tilston.cheshire.sch.uk

Our Governors are local people with an interest in helping make Tilston a thriving and successful school.  Eleven Governors make up the Governing Body and most are appointed for a four year term of office.

The full Governing Body meets once a term and committees of Governors do more detailed work in areas such as Achievement and Safeguarding, Staffing, Finance and Buildings.  Most Governors have an individual role to take a special interest in areas such as Safeguarding and Health and Safety.

Full details of Governors' roles, responsibilities and terms of office can be found by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and opening the 'Governing Body Details' document.

Our current Governing Body consists of:

Kay Dutton: Chair of Governors

I am a former pupil of Tilston School and I have worked in the education sector for most of my career. I currently work at the University of Chester where I work as an academic to support both undergraduate students and staff colleagues. I live in Tilston with my husband and daughter, Alexa (who is now at high school and is also a former Tilston pupil), where we also run a beef farming business. I have been on the Governing Body for a number of years now, and became Chair of Governors in 2018. Tilston School gave me a great start to my education and I am proud to be able to help continue the good work that the school has achieved in recent years.

Lucy Cheshire: Parent Governor

I am a mum of three, Lilla at Tilston, Tom at university and Annie an interior designer. I have lived locally since 2002 and currently work part-time in mutli-channel marketing for my husband's estate agency business whilst completing a diploma in  nutrition, specialising in children and adolescents. I have a background in sport and play an active part in captaining a young hockey development team playing in the Cheshire League. I enjoy most sports though it's often from standing on a side-line and watching one of the children!

Sue Fryers: Foundation Governor

I have lived in Tilston for over 30 years and became a governor at Tilston School in 2011.  Before I retired, I worked as a language teacher in a Wirral school, where I was Head of Russian and also taught French.  Whilst there I was Staff Governor for 8 years.  On the Tilston Governing Body, I am Chair of the Achievement and Safeguarding committee, with repsonsibility for speacial needs and safeguarding.  In my free time I enjoy going to the theatre and concerts, bell-ringing, playing the piano and walking.

Neil Ritchie: LEA Governor & Vice Chair

I have lived in Tilston since 1989 and have been a Governor of the school since 1995, as well as being a Parish Councillor. Before I retired I worked for Cheshire County Council as head of their architectural and building service. I then served as Ward Councillor for Tilston on Chester City Council and until 2011 on Cheshire West and Cheshire Council. This included the roles of executive member for environment, Lord Mayor of Chester and Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council.  At home Kathie runs Tilston Lodge Bed and Breakfast.  We have two daughters and one son, who are married and have children of their own.  Of our six grandchildren one is at University and the five are all either at primary or secondary school.

Jo Callister: Staff Governor

My name is Jo Callister, I work with the House Martins (year three and four class). I have worked at Tilston School for twelve years; ten years in year five and six and two years with year three and four. I am thoroughly enjoying the new age group, embracing the different approach needed for the younger children. I work as part of the Senior Leadership Team as Key Stage Two Leader. I have worked for Cheshire West and Chester for many years as a class teacher and as a deputy head teacher in two schools.

A role I particularly enjoy at Tilston is Literacy Subject Leader as I have the opportunity to spend time working with each age group and keep up to date with the latest changes. It is a joy and a privilege to work with the wonderful children and staff at Tilston School.

I have two teenage sons, one at university and one in sixth form. I love art, walking my dogs and spending time with friends and family, especially my lovely husband and boys.

Current Vacancy: Foundation Governor and Rector of St Mary’s Church

Jo Huxtable: Co-opted Governor

My name is Jo Huxtable, I have been involved with Tilston School for over 18 years, firstly as a parent and then for the past 14 years as a member of staff.  I am currently working in both key stage 2 classes sharing my time between The Kestrels and The Housemartins; this is something I love as it gives me the opportunity to work with the children across both age groups.  My role has taken on a different emphasis over the past few years as I have been able to put my mental health training into practice, working with children with specific needs, this part of my job is very important to me as I believe mental health and wellbeing plays a vital part in creating a happy and inclusive environment helping children being the best they can be.

Kelsey Mort: Staff Governor and Headteacher

I was appointed as Headteacher at Tilston School in January 2018 and I thoroughly enjoy my role. I have been in the teaching profession for 20 years and have worked across Nottingham, Stoke-On-Trent, Shropshire and Cheshire.  I have been a senior leader for the past 12 years.  I love learning and have continued my own professional development in special educational needs.  I am very proud to be part of such a hard working, caring staff and feel very well supported by our dedicated Governing Body.  Our core principal is to 'Bring out the best in everyone.'  Together we work hard to achieve this.

Rob Hall: Community Governor

I moved to Tilston in 2009 with my wife Julie and our two sons. I am the Chairman of Mitchell Charlesworth Chartered Accountants and am based in Chester. I am a keen golfer and skier and a regular at Molineux to watch my beloved Wolves. On the Governing Body I am Chair of the Finance Committee and also sit on the Buildings Committee.

Gill Putnam: Co-Opted Governor

Nick and I came to Tilston 27 years ago. With 3 young boys to bring up I was Akela in Tilston Scout Group,  and a governor at their primary school.

Work took us away to foreign lands and London for several years, and away permanently from my work as a solicitor.

We were very happy to reinstall ourselves in Tilston a few years ago and, now retired, there is more time to spend in London; to go trekking and skiing; to keep fit and healthy; and to support the Carden Arms. I was recently elected to the Parish Council.

Jay Tindle: Parent Governor

48 Year Old Father of 2 children, who both attend Tilston Primary School.  I have been involved over the past few years with various charitable projects, including Iceland Foods Foundation and Save The Family.  I gave up my career to become a stay at home Dad, to look after my children when our first child, Teddy, was born.  I spent many years working within the high security sector, designing and implementing secure electronic and physical systems for major governoment projects including HMP, embassy's and military establishments.  My career took me all over the world and travel has been something I have always been fond of.  My hobbies include cycling, skiing and music.  In the past few years I have rekindled my passion for music and am a founder member of 'Counting cows' a covers band gigging around the North West for charity.
